The Casual Monger: Lemon-Thyme Cheese for the Intermediate Monger

The Casual Monger: Lemon-Thyme Cheese for the Intermediate Monger

Feature image via 4.bp.blogspot.com

One of the first Homosteading articles I wrote introduced the concept of making the world’s most basic and delicious yogurt cheese using minimal ingredients. In the spirit of mongering on the cheap, I wanted this week’s post to provide a slight challenge to the economic dairy enthusiast, and broach next-level cheese with gusto. Behold! A delicious cheese that introduces the use of acids (vinegar and rennet) without all of the complications of full-fledged mongering.

Sober in the City: An Atheist Walks into AA

Sober in the City: An Atheist Walks into AA

image

I’m an atheist, so it’s pretty ironic that my epic celebration of Easter Sunday 2008 is what ultimately landed me in an AA meeting. On that fateful Sunday, my biological mother (I was adopted because she was a crack addict — a shit show of a story that I will save for later) came into the city to take me out for drunk brunch, an activity that seemed to be the only thing we could bond over because being sober while listening to her justify her abusive behavior was soul-crushing. We started off with the usual: bottomless mimosas. This turned into an afternoon of bar hopping. After she went home, my partner and I invited friends over to our apartment and we continued to drink… until around 8am-ISH.

Drawn to Comics’ One-Year Anniversary Presents The First Annual Autostraddle Comic and Sequential Art Awards

Drawn to Comics’ One-Year Anniversary Presents The First Annual Autostraddle Comic and Sequential Art Awards

image

We’re living in a time when women, especially women of color and queer women, are enjoying more and more opportunities to star in and even make their own comics. There are all sorts of amazing comics being put out by mainstream and indie publishers, and with the rise of webcomics, its easier and easier to find stories that resonate with your life. Yes, there are still plenty of problems. Women, again, especially women of color and queer women, are still vastly underrepresented both when it comes to creators and characters. Women are still too often killed off or used as sex objects in comics. Women are too often called Fake Geek Girls in real life. So when we find comics that not only feature queer women – either as characters or creators – or feminist messages, we need to highlight and celebrate them. That’s what I’ve been attempting to do with Drawn to Comics over this past year, and now that’s what we hope to do with the first annual Autostraddle Comic and Sequential Art Awards.

Comedy Crush: Everything Brittani Nichols Touches Turns to Hilarious

Comedy Crush: Everything Brittani Nichols Touches Turns to Hilarious

It’s been a while, but I’m still not out of nice things to say about Brittani Nichols. In case you’re new around here, Brittani is the writer-rapper-comedian who brought Words With Girls into your life (and TV). B’s production credentials include working on You Above All, The Lovely Rejects, Mimic, The Voice, and The Silent Thief, which I learned from her IMDb profile because she has one because she’s practically Hollywood royalty. She likes quesadillas and cider, hates hipsters, and is hilarious. Words With Girls premieres tomorrow on Color Creative TV.

Dear Queer Diary: So Long, Farewell

Dear Queer Diary: So Long, Farewell

There’s something strange about ending a journal. For weeks, months, maybe even years, you’re writing — making lists and sketching kittens and recording quotations and keeping track of school and work and friendships and loves and then suddenly, you turn a page and there’s only a few lines left.

Rebel Girls: Defining Privilege, Oppression, and Everything In Between

Rebel Girls: Defining Privilege, Oppression, and Everything In Between

image

One of the most amazing parts of a women’s studies education is the opportunity to put names to problems. The phenomena of women struggling with “the problem that had no name” is one that persists, even today: we experience discrimination, harassment, inequality, disempowerment, and oppression, but we struggle to define it, label it, or successfully articulate why it was wrong without the vocabulary to do so. As I’m sure you’ve learned from Tumblr, one of the most integral pieces of that vocabulary is the juggernaut: “privilege.” It’s common now, when we spot inequities, to label the unfortunate consequences points of “oppression,” and we’re very quick to assume the root cause of those inequities is, thus, a form of “privilege.” But sometimes it’s a little more complicated than that. There’s a universe in between and a lot of components that make privilege and oppression real things, and it’s fundamental to understand them.

Comedy Crush: Silicon Valley’s Amy Aniobi

Amy Aniobi is a writer whose credits include Silicon Valley, The Michael J. Fox Show, Lisa and Amy, The Slutty Years, and Awkward Black Girl. She’s the bomb diggity and, I think, truly blessed now that she’s been referred to as such on the internet. She likes dancing and baking cookies.

How did you come up with the idea/unorthodox webseries style for Lisa and Amy?

I got the idea after a friend…
