Ah, HTML. HyperText Markup Language. Basically, the stuff websites are made from. The cloth from which our internet is cut. And utilizable in our comment section in particular, but also in many comment sections all around this interconnected cyberspace we’ve built ourselves.

FRIDAY OPEN THREAD: I’m Reading A Newspaper As We Speak, Even Though It Might Be Frowned Upon

FRIDAY OPEN THREAD: I’m Reading A Newspaper As We Speak, Even Though It Might Be Frowned Upon

Hey there, rocket men / women / people! When are you gonna come down? I hope it’s soon, because it’s time for the Friday Open Thread, every Friday’s legendary girl-on-girl Internet party. It’s BYOB, but, like, that is totally balanced out by the scene, y’know? We have a Friday Open Thread every week, most likely because a lot of us would rather sit at the computer than embark on journeys out-of-doors (is it just me?) but also because you’re all so cute that I just wanna pinch your cheeks and I can’t imagine myself doing that without first creating a safe space in which you can post photos of those cute faces as well as your pets. Especially your pets.

Rhymes With Witches: Partners in Crime, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn

Rhymes With Witches: Partners in Crime, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn

To be honest y’all I’m not much of a comic book geek. I don’t purposefully skip the graphic novels section in bookstores. It’s not that I dislike them or find them boring. I’ve read a couple here and there but I’m not engrossed into that world as much as other people who deserve to be called fans. With that being said, there’s just something about Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. They are just so cool and so badass that even though I don’t know anything about the DC world, I still wanted to talk about them!! And to be honest, they are the only reason I have even considered visiting my local comic book store.

Dear Queer Diary: I Need A Snack

Dear Queer Diary: I Need A Snack

image

When I open the cover of my journal, I am filled with a passion for introspection, a desire for self-reflection, and a hunger for… delicious snack foods.

My queer journaling role model, the great Virginia Woolf herself, wisely wrote in A Room of One’s Own that “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” This sentiment clearly extends to journaling. After all, how can I even begin to think back over the events of my day if my stomach is grumbling for nourishment? Sometimes, one simply cannot journal well without a snack.

The Fool’s Journey: Tarot School Is In Session

The Fool’s Journey: Tarot School Is In Session

What if there was this deck of cards where there was one for every feeling and experience you could possibly go through, and when you felt a little lost or confused or messed up you could pull them out of your pocket, ask a question, sling a few down and start making sense of your head and your heart?

Bingo! It’s called tarot, and it will totally change your life.

Notes From A Queer Engineer: Can Inanimate Objects Be Sexist?

Notes From A Queer Engineer: Can Inanimate Objects Be Sexist?

image

“Is the Oculus Rift sexist?” That was the provocative question posed in a March 28 Quartz article outlining an investigation that computer graphics programmer danah boydundertook during the late ’90s to investigate why 3D immersion environments made her female colleagues physically sick while male peers were unaffected. After a few years of cross-disciplinary research (including visual psychology experiments and interviews with trans people undergoing hormone replacement therapy), boyd concluded that there are two types of depth perception: motion parallax (which male-assigned bodies tend to prioritize), and shape-from-shading (which female-assigned bodies tend to prioritize). That virtual reality systems address the former but not the latter is an example of design bias which largely favors men — in a word, sexism.

The New Comic “Lucky & Scary” Features an Adorable Queer Couple

The New Comic “Lucky & Scary” Features an Adorable Queer Couple

image

I’m just an absolute sucker for a cute queer romance between two ladies, and so when I found out about the new comic Lucky and Scary I was tickled pink. Here we have the Tale as Old as Time: a cute blonde femme with a penchant for dressing like Sailor Moon meets a “very gender neutral chick” with a sweet leather jacket and the two fall head-over-heels in love. Writer and artist Hannah Hallman shows us little peeks into their relationship in these charming one-shots that show us both the highs and the lows of queer love.
