The idea that sisters are paying “more attention [to Gabby’s hair] than her gold medal[s]” is exactly the image of dysfunctional, belligerent Black women that the media loves. In the understandable rush to defend Gabby from critics, we’ve overlooked that this narrative is being pushed by racist, sexist media that can’t be trusted to report accurately on Black women’s opinions on just about anything. There’s very little evidence that hair is a priority when it comes to Black women’s feelings about Gabby Douglas.

Can I still be a penpal?! I didn’t know about it so I didn’t sign up but i swear i am a great penpal!

honestly right now i think i’ve got to put a cap on it. everybody’s already matched up with people of the age/language/other stuff that they wanted and we’re just sending out emails to let people know who they’re been partnered with. but there will be another chance! there will! it’ll probably be in a few months after we’re figured out a way to speed up the time between sending in your info and getting an actual pal.

no estoy familiarizada con el concepto de amigo por correspondencia (pen pal), pero parece sumamente interesante…dicho esto, me gustaría saber si los intercambios pueden darse en español y si pueden sumarse personas heterosexuales?

claro que sí! ya he emparejado todos los pen pals esta vez, pero cuando lo hacemos la próxima vez, puedes registrar. esta vez, teníamos varias personas que querían un pen pal hispanohablante y también habían pocos heterosexuales.

Are you still planning on doing a second round of penpals for people who didn’t have addresses the first time?

Once I figure out a way that doesn’t involve a two year long turn-around time, absolutely. I keep trying to come up with fancy plans involving spreadsheets and mail merges, but I just can’t make it work yet. If you’ve got any ideas, I’m all ears/eyes.

i haven’t gotten a penpal yet :( i got flower seeds to send and pretty paper and a mix and everything!

Don’t worry! You’re going to be able to use them soon, I promise! Julia and I (but mostly Julia. You guys, she’s amazing) have be sending out emails every day because we’re so excited for you all to have buddies. I’m so so so sorry it’s taken 8x longer than I expected, but I was only expecting there to be ~100 people who’d want to play pen pals with me and I got overwhelmed in the best way possible by how many of you wanted in.
