ASIAN AMERICAN DISNEY PRINCESSES:
by Kim (annakimskywalker) & Donnie (donniekompany)
11x17 inkjet prints

Most of us grew up watching Disney classics featuring the beautiful Disney princesses we all know and love. Disney was and continues to be a staple in the lives of many children. However, despite how much we admired these princesses, it was difficult relating to them because they didn’t physically represent us. Take a look at any Disney princess product and you will see the preference towards the White princesses, white washing of princesses of color (skin color, facial features, etc), and the shoving of these princesses to the side.

In the 76 years since Snow White was released, there have been 12 (soon to be 13) Disney princesses, only 5 of whom are women of color (Jasmine in 1992, Pocahontas in 1995, Mulan in 1998, Kida in 2001, and Tiana in 2009). It took 55 years to portray a woman of color as a princess, and these portrayals also came with problematic and inaccurate representations of their respective cultures & histories (not to mention Tiana was a frog more than half of the movie).

How are young APIA children supposed to believe in “happy endings” when we don’t see them happening to people who look like us?

All of the above was the inspiration behind this photoshoot. We believe physically showing some of our favorite princesses as Asian American women will allow us to build more of a connection with the princesses who weren’t women of color, but who still possess qualities we admire and/or see in ourselves.

**These are just 5 of the 15 we recently showed at our university’s Asian American Studies Expo.

Today Autostraddle Was Especially Awesome

Sometimes we have days where Rachel has to team pick her left foot and I have to do a listling of the top 15 thoughts I have while my girlfriend is outside smoking and laneia has to create a So You’re Out of Laundry Detergent Playlist, and sometimes we have days like today which include:

What AG-Gag Bills Are And Why They Want To Outlaw The Truth: Cara talks about new initiatives to stop animal rights activists from conducting undercover investigations within the meat industry by labeling anyone who “enters an animal or research facility to take pictures by photograph, video camera, or other means with the intent to defame the facility or its owner” as a terrorist. This is really scary shit, and another great example of how corporate money controls legislation in this country.

How Finding My Korean Mother Gave Me The Courage To Transition - I actually read this on HuffPo while doing research for Meet 51 Kickass Women From the 2013 Trans 100 and it made me cry and it was just so lovely and so we asked Andy if we could re-pub it and she said yes, yay! In the essay, Andy, who was adopted as a baby, returns to Korea for the first time, where she hopes to track down her birth parents. She admits that her inability to move forward with her physical transition “was largely due to my unknown family living far away in Korea.” What happens when she finds them is so moving and lovely and you just have to read it.

Happy Grilled Cheese Day! I think Grilled Cheese Day happens right before Tax Day on purpose, because nothing eases the pain of giving the government all of your money like melted cheese!

Shooting Star Missed the Mark Lizz had a lot of feelings last night about how shitty Glee’s “school violence” episode was and its ableist mishandling of Becky’s character, and she wrote them for you last night and if you saw the episode you should read this.

Brittani Does Dinah Shore, Girlfriend and Dignity Still Intact - Every time Brittani writes a thing, especially a thing about a thing she did, I always read it right away even if I’m super-busy because it’s always funny, because Brittani is always funny. She’s especially funny when she talks about her girlfriend LIzz. I read Brittani’s recap of Dinah last year probably ten times, I’ve only read this twice so far but will probably read it again before bed. Also, it’s chock-full of pictures of stars like Brittani, Lauren, Croce, Haviland, Ashley, Cee, Julie, Brandy and Brittani’s girlfriend Liz!

Also happened today:

Track Stop: The Cold War Kids wrote a song about Crystal’s life, and a queer hottie did something sexy with Janet Jackson!

I read and loved a bunch of things, mostly about terrible things like Three Strikes Laws, homelessness and murder, but also about like, YA Novels and Ms Magazine and Megan Mullally and stuff.

Laura made quiche cupcakes for you to take to work or school with you and put in your mouth and feel so happy inside!
