Like my Mom, the end scene was my favourite. From Sandy’s tongue flicking, cigarette tossing, sex-eyed invitation, to Danny’s reaction that excited him so much that he couldn’t do anything but exclaim an indignant, “Sandy!” before swiveling his hips and dancing his feelings, the marvelous “You’re the One That I Want” never grew old and my chest would tighten with gay joy every time I watched it.

Maybe most important, though, is the “technical/social dualism,” that keeps us from discussing these inequalities and prejudices. We’ve discussed this idea before, that in the sciences, technical activities are the only ones valued. There is no space for subjects that could be classified as social: like talking about gay rights, or women’s rights, or social justice and inequalities. Of course, this is a false differentiation, because there is really no way to entirely separate the two, and anyone who’s worked on a team project knows that even in engineering, social dynamics are just as important as technical abilities. The devaluing of “social” topics really just serves to silence important conversations about inequalities.
I want an inclusive experience. People who never tell me I’m too much, too little and all the wrong things. I want four hour long brunches and the beginnings of friendships where we forget we’re all here because we’re queer get used to it and might just stay because something in us connects through the shy awkwardness of performing yourself to people who don’t know you yet.
I want us to become the kind of friends who hold each other through the really bad stuff. And then go for afternoon tea and ice cream and hot chocolate and cupcakes and cocktails and pizza and more cupcakes and vintage shopping. I want it not to matter who we love. I want love to be love to be love to be love.
