Playlist: I Am A Baby Bear Coming Out Of Hibernation

“what if grace made a playlist that was done in the persona of a baby bear ending hibernation and coming out of their cave for the first time since winter, would that make this day better” -Rachel

Hello and welcome to spring, my bear friends! Today is the first really nice day of the year w/r/t weather, and I finally feel so awake! In celebration, here is some music that I, a bear, am listening to today as I stumble out of my cave and into the rest of the world to do all the bear things I put off so I could sleep.

Want to Support the Women of the Trans 100? Here’s How.

Want to Support the Women of the Trans 100? Here’s How.

image

The second annual Trans 100 list was announced at a live event on the night of Sunday, March 30th. This list highlights trans people who are helping to make a positive impact in the trans community and the world. Jen Richards, who cofounded the Trans 100 with Antonia D’Orsay, says that the Trans 100′s goal is “to create a counter narrative that offers a growing compendium of people, organizations and projects that simultaneously reveals the diversity of trans people and celebrates the work being done in the community.”

Notes From A Queer Engineer: Silicone Is Sexy

Notes From A Queer Engineer: Silicone Is Sexy

Recently my work brought me to China for two weeks of training, lab tours and factory inspections. Aside from the extra special daily adventures in miming, menu-pointing and general miscommunication (I wish I spoke Mandarin or Cantonese!), my two biggest takeaways of the trip were:

  1. Hong Kong is just as crowded, overpriced, terrible and captivating as New York.
  2. Silicone is so fucking cool.

Also.Also.Also. Rosie the Riveter is Rethinking Sexism, Gender, and Sexuality and Other Stories We Missed This Week

Hello, Huskies! I say this because apparently a big basketball victory happened this week and people are excited about it. But let’s be real, I’m just in it for the puppies. Here’s the news we missed while I was looking at pictures of baby huskies on the internet.

I want publishers and retailers to look at Lumberjanes and say, “oh yeah, people do actually want stories like this, maybe we should look into more stories about and by women and queer people and people of color and trans people and people who are disabled. Maybe we should do a Black Widow movie, at least. Maybe we should tell some stories that aren’t about straight white dudes and the sexy women they save.”

Hey, Jessie J Isn’t Bi Or Gay, Much To Our Dismay She’s Strai, Okay

Hey, Jessie J Isn’t Bi Or Gay, Much To Our Dismay She’s Strai, Okay

When Jessie J came out as being a human who likes both men and women a few years back, many of her diehard fans were surprised: not to learn that their favorite human wasn’t heterosexual, but that she wasn’t homosexual. There were rumors — never confirmed — that she’d been an out lesbian prior to getting a record deal, but we were on board with this new information, too, because it didn’t negate the especially glorious rumor that her girlfriend was one of the studs/AGs dancing in her amazing music video “Do It Like a Dude.” It was a groundbreaking video — studs and AGs are a severely underrepresented portion of the LGBTQ community and many of us queer women were thrilled in our hearts and pants to finally see a reflection of that diverse population on MTV. Because of that video and the queer subtext in her other songs, we were instantly happy to have Jessie J on our team. Needless to say, these same fans were pretty surprised to hear today that Jessie J is now coming out as… straight?

Lumberjanes Launches Tomorrow! Grace Ellis and Shannon Watters Are Spilling Their Guts

Lumberjanes Launches Today! Grace Ellis and Shannon Watters Are Spilling Their Guts

“There was one girl who sat cross-legged on the ground as soon as I handed it to her, read the entire thing, stood up, and told me that she liked it and asked if there was more, and like, my heart can’t handle that much joy. I was fighting off happy tears all day. This comic would have meant so much to me as a kid, so to know and literally see that Lumberjanes is affecting girls in a positive way now makes me indescribably happy.”

Style is Style: Put Some Pants On!

Style is Style: Put Some Pants On!

I have a confession to make, of the sartorial variety. Until very recently, I hadn’t worn jeans in about 3 years. Jean shopping has always been a bit of a nightmare for me: a small waist and plentiful hips and thighs means that most pairs were loose in the waist and far too tight in the hips. Super uncomfortable and quite often tears would fall in the change room. So, over time, I conveniently eradicated them from my wardrobe. Essentially, I learned to live without denim so that I wouldn’t have to go through the headache (and heartache) of trying on 10+ pairs of jeans only to find that none of them worked. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Report On Media Gender Diversity Confirms The Patriarchy Continues Controlling Everything, Being The Worst

Report On Media Gender Diversity Confirms The Patriarchy Continues Controlling Everything, Being The Worst

On Thursday, the Women’s Media Center released its third annual report on gender bias in major US media creation. The results, I’m sorry to say, confirm what many of us already know anecdotally: that women are underrepresented across the board.

Here’s the overview:

“Hark! A Vagrant’s” Kate Beaton Return’s to Long Form Comics With “Ducks”

“Hark! A Vagrant’s” Kate Beaton Return’s to Long Form Comics With “Ducks”

image

Kate Beaton, the writer and illustrator of one of the best webcomics of all time, Hark! A Vagrant, recently released in five parts a long form comic about her time spent working on the oil sands of Alberta. These vignettes tell about tragedies, loss, daily interactions and the lasting effect that working there had on her. If you’re unfamiliar with the Athabasca Oil Sands, they’re the largest known deposit of bitumen in the world, in the form of semi-solid crude bitumen, sand, clay and water. Beaton worked there for a while to pay off her college debt. These comics deal with Beaton’s memories of her time there and how she’s still trying to work out her feelings about it.

So there’s this thing that’s happening where I keep going to these events- lectures, shows, performances— that feel really important and I want to share them with other people but I don’t know how. Taking pictures of people speaking or screaming into a mic or a photo of a photo of art and...
