Rhymes With Witches: Partners in Crime, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn

Rhymes With Witches: Partners in Crime, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn

image

To be honest y’all I’m not much of a comic book geek. I don’t purposefully skip the graphic novels section in bookstores. It’s not that I dislike them or find them boring. I’ve read a couple here and there but I’m not engrossed into that world as much as other people who deserve to be called fans. With that being said, there’s just something about Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. They are just so cool and so badass that even though I don’t know anything about the DC world, I still wanted to talk about them!! And to be honest, they are the only reason I have even considered visiting my local comic book store.

Glitter Brigade: The Magical Beginning of A Queer Youth Group

Glitter Brigade: The Magical Beginning of A Queer Youth Group

image

I wish I could say that starting a queer youth group has always been a priority of mine. Or that I’ve always wanted to create a safe space for underserved queer youth of color to exist and develop community with each other. It feels like when other people tell their stories, they’ve always been connected to the needs of their communities and the people living in them. But that’s not me and in order to talk about this queer youth group thang, I’ve got to let the beginning be and let out the life bits that are less than shiny.

Oh my goodness.  This is what happens when I’m supposed to be doing life things.  I bring to you A-Camp Bop because sometimes I’m just hilarious and I think things are hilarious so here you go.  Laugh with me.

Because you know…M needs more help with getting any sort of queer attention.  Just trying to look out for people.

I hate to have to explain my joke but it is like those really great Teen Bop magazines…you know what I’m talking about, right?

SEE YOU ON THE MOUNTAIN!!!

20 Gifts To Make For Mother’s Day

20 Gifts To Make For Mother’s Day

image

Mother’s Day is this weekend! Have you gotten your mom something awesome yet? (I see you, procrastinators!) I like to give handmade gifts for “appreciation” days like Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Teacher Appreciation Day and so on and so forth. Taking the time to make something handmade shows how much you care, which is what the day is all about, right? It’s also super easy to spoil moms with crafty stuff this Mother’s Day, because no one appreciates your skills quite like the human who saved all of your paintings from K-12 Art Class.

Queer Girl City Guide: Durham, North Carolina

Queer Girl City Guide: Durham, North Carolina

image

Welcome to Durham, North Carolina. Come for graduate school; stay forever.

I’ve lived in Durham for five years now. I moved here from Miami to begin a graduate program at Duke, and one of my biggest concerns as a baby-gay moving to the South was whether or not I would be the only queer in town, floating haplessly along like lonely gay tumbleweed. No need to worry: Durham is a magical queer-lovin’ haven in NC. When Amendment One, which amended the constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman, passed in May this past year, Durham voted 70% against (and if you drive around Durham’s neighborhoods, you will occasionally see hand-painted signs asserting this fact). And with good reason; queers are everywhere in Durham, busy being all kinds of awesome.

Sober in the City: Redefining My Queerness On Fire Island

Sober in the City: Redefining My Queerness On Fire Island

image

I’ve been queer in New York City for 15 years, and sober for the last five of those years. However, long before I jumped in a U-Haul and planted my baby dyke roots in the Big Apple, I was born, raised, and spent a good portion of my life in Any City, USA. I stayed in my hometown for undergrad and came out during college. Like many Any City, USAsacross the country, my hometown, at the time when I resided there, had little to offer in the queer culture department. Other than my college’s small LGBTQ student group, which had less than 10 regular participants, there was not a single LGBTQ-specific community center, sex shop, health center, coffee shop, or museum in the entire state. But, my city was home to the state’s only gay nightclub.

Dear Queer Diary: I Need A Snack

Dear Queer Diary: I Need A Snack

image

When I open the cover of my journal, I am filled with a passion for introspection, a desire for self-reflection, and a hunger for… delicious snack foods.

My queer journaling role model, the great Virginia Woolf herself, wisely wrote in A Room of One’s Own that “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” This sentiment clearly extends to journaling. After all, how can I even begin to think back over the events of my day if my stomach is grumbling for nourishment? Sometimes, one simply cannot journal well without a snack.

Faking It Episode 103 Recap: The Protestiest Protestor Who Ever Protested

Faking It Episode 103 Recap: The Protestiest Protestor Who Ever Protested

image

Welcome to the third recap of the first season of Faking It, a shiny and gorgeous new show from the network that brought you The Battle for Ozzfest and Engaged & Underaged.

We open on a bright, glorious spring day at The Blue Oasis in the Middle of Red Texas High School, where students are lounging on afghan quilts with apples and notebooks and Amy is throwing M’n’Ms at Karma’s head as Karma writes in her notebook. This is similar to what I’d like to do to Karma’s head, except instead of tiny chocolate candies it would be rotten avocados with bombs inside them.

Orphan Black’s Delphine and the Dangers of the Bisexual Femme Fatale

Orphan Black’s Delphine and the Dangers of the Bisexual Femme Fatale

image

[WARNING: this post contains spoilers up to the current episode]

The character of Delphine on the TV show Orphan Black is one of the most high-profile depictions of bisexual women in current popular media. In fact, it’s one of very few media texts in which a bisexual woman character actually uses the word “bisexuality” in order to describe herself (a rare occasion indeed!). But while incredibly exciting to see this kind of depiction, we should also be aware of the role that Delphine’s bisexuality plays in the plot.
