On Continuing to Live In the Same World that Made Elliot Rodger (and Many Like Him)

On Continuing to Live In the Same World that Made Elliot Rodger (and Many Like Him)

feature image credit to the Los Angeles Times

Much of the staff of this website spent this past week on a mountain in a tiny and lovingly created queer community — not a perfect community, but still the sort of place where more often than not, consent is confirmed before giving a hug. In the middle of all this, we heard through our patches of access to the outer world that somebody named Elliot…

Q-Taku: “Sailor Moon” Is Even Better With All The Gay Parts

Q-taku is a new column by Rose where she discusses anime, manga and other parts of Japanese pop culture, and her take on it all as a queer feminist fan.

Sella Munn

The summer of 2014 is shaping up to be a big one for Sailor Moon fans. For starters, there’s a new reboot TV series based on the comics airing in July, as I’ve covered before here. But a little over a week ago, Viz Media dropped what is…

BlogHer will be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year in sunny San Jose, California, or “Silicon Valley” as it is referred to in BlogHer press materials. This will probably be the best BlogHer of all time because they are actually allowing me to speak to a room of human beings for something like eight entire hours!! You really should come and check it out. Let me tell you why.

Also.Also.Also: La Roux Challenges Women’s Colleges and Other Stories We Missed This Week

Hello happy campers! Since I’ve been at home with my family and cats instead of on the mountain with you, I figured I’d let my pal Esmeralda help write about the news this week! Here’s the news we missed while I was living vicariously through this A-Camp open thread.

To Label or Not to Label?

Talking about sexuality and gender identity is always very personal and very complex.

Faking It 105 Episode Recap: We’re Not Acting Like Lesbians, We’re Acting Like Best Friends

Faking It 105 Episode Recap: We’re Not Acting Like Lesbians, We’re Acting Like Best Friends

image

Welcome to the fifth recap of the first season of Faking It, a family game show from the network that brought you Celebrity Rap Superstar and A Double Shot At Love With The Ikki Twins. Obviously this recap is AN ENTIRE WEEK LATE. This is because I was at A-Camp last week and my plan to finish the recap at A-Camp was foiled by A-Camp internet completely breaking down!

We open in Amy’s boudoir,…

There aren’t words for how amazing this is. Alcohol is a big part of the young adult community. It’s an even bigger part of the LGBTQ community, at least, in my experience it has been. Not that I’m oblivious to the fact that there is rarely a situation one is truly alone in,
I was not aware of many other queers in the same dry boat. It scared me, it still does scare me. But this helped, tremendously. I’m not sure if pride is even in the books for me this year, but this at least gives me a chance at celebrating and enjoying this time in a new light.

Suzanne Geary’s Webcomic “Brainchild” Brings a Supernatural, Queer College Story to Your Computer

Suzanne Geary’s Webcomic “Brainchild” Brings a Supernatural, Queer College Story to Your Computer

Brainchild combines the supernatural, college and lesbianism– three things I have a lot of experience with (or maybe really just two things)– and it combines them extremely well. Written and drawn by Suzanne Geary, it’s the story of a college student, her friends, her ghosts and possibly a lot more. The art is gorgeous, the women are queer and the world is full of demons and brothers back from…

Make A Thing: This Light Box Helps You Take Better Photos

Make A Thing: This Light Box Helps You Take Better Photos

image

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the best at taking pictures. I can paint, draw, and sculpt ’til the cows come home, but something about photography just eludes me. I also don’t have a fancy camera to take pictures with.

However, seeing as I like making things and telling you about it, I figure it’d be nice to learn a thing or two about photography. So far, I’ve made absolutely no…

OPEN THREAD: A-Camp 5.0 Happened So Now Let’s Talk About How Much We Miss Each Other

OPEN THREAD: A-Camp 5.0 Happened So Now Let’s Talk About How Much We Miss Each Other

image

The thing about camp is that time just flies! It just whizzes right by you — it seems like the first day of camp will never arrive, and then it’s right there in front of you, all the smiling faces and pranks and poems and feelings and costumes and then you’re exhausted and the altitude is so much but also you’re hungry and SO ALIVE. Today we had to leave the mountain and therefore there is a…

Liquor On The Mountain: How To Taste Beer

Liquor On The Mountain: How To Taste Beer

liquor_in_theweb

Hello, queermos! Right now, I’m on a mountain with a bazillion other beautiful shining faces. And 20 of those shining faces are drinking beer with me. We’ve historically done a whiskey tasting at A-Camp, and since that was so successful we did a wine tasting last A-Camp. This time around, we’re learning how to taste craft beer with the help of a new generous sponsor, Hillcrest Brewing Company(th…

Make A Thing: Sacred Queer Heart Shrines

Make A Thing: Sacred Queer Heart Shrines

image

If you think about it, you’ve probably made a shrine in your lifetime or have one in your living space right now. Remember when you put up posters and pictures of your favorite musicians, actors, athletes, or someone super awesome you admired on your bedroom walls growing up? (Maybe you still do this, which is cool.) I’d say those walls are similar to a shrine by definition — a sacred place or…
