New York State Sued Because Trans-Exclusionary Medicaid Regulation Has Got To Go

New York State Sued Because Trans-Exclusionary Medicaid Regulation Has Got To Go

image

Last week, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, Legal Aid Society and the law firm of Willkie, Farr and Gallagherfiled a class action lawsuit against the state of New York, which has discriminated against transgender people seeking healthcare since 1998 with a regulation that categorically denies Medicaid coverage for gender affirming healthcare. SRLP has been working to reverse this regulation since…

An entire year has passed since the shouts heard around the world reverberated throughout the Texas Capitol and forced the state legislature to come to a screeching halt. Rise Up/Levanta Texas formed in late June 2013 as a…

Dear Queer Diary: Notes from The Road

Dear Queer Diary: Notes from The Road

Dear Queer Diary_Rory Midhani_640px

Sometimes, my dear queer diarists, you are fortunate enough to go on a vacation. These occasions, I know, are sadly few and far between. Even fewer and far betweener are the occasions on which we are cast adrift without the comforting cocoon of the internet — clutching our journals hopefully and praying that we find our ways without the help of our friend Google maps.

Such have been the last few…

Supreme Court Rules “Free Speech” More Important Than Safe Access to Abortions, Healthcare

Supreme Court Rules “Free Speech” More Important Than Safe Access to Abortions, Healthcare

Feature image via Fibonacci Blue/Flickr

The Supreme Court has struck down a Massachusetts law establishing a 35-foot “buffer zone” around abortion clinics, stating that it violated the free speech rights of the groups who often picket outside them. It also cast doubt on a prior Supreme Court decision, issued in 2000, upholding much smaller “floating buffer zones” in some states. Chief Justice…

Orphan Black Episode 210 Recap : “By Means Which Have Never Yet Been Tried”

Orphan Black Episode 210 Recap : “By Means Which Have Never Yet Been Tried”

Hey Sestras! Welcome to the recap of the season finale of Orphan Black, the show that just succeeded in mashing my mind grapes into brain wine.

We open with scenes of Sarah being stripped down and examined in a dark room. She is barraged with personal questions, from when she started menstruating to when she lost her virginity.

When did I lose my virginity? Ask your mom.

Rebel Girls: The Writing That Made A Movement (Or A Bunch of Feminism’s Primary Sources)

There are these two words that come up in women’s studies all the time: reading and writing. They’re kind of the core values of an interdisciplinary major based in theory and personal essays — you need to be able to read someone else’s and write your own. Women’s Studies is an academic field, which has run into a fair share of criticism for that very fact over time. Yes, we’re all words. Yes,…

Orange is the New Black 303: Don’t Trust A Bitch With Funfetti

The Prodigal Daughter of White Trojan Horsery has returned to Litchfield, minus her bespectacled toxic popsicle and plus a newer harder attitude. What adventures await our little vanilla wafer? Time can only tell, inmating ritualists.

The Unknown Play Project

In August of this year I will be hitting the road with two other people to capture footage of a handful of spaces across the US where lesbians and queer women gather. It’s for a documentary project, inspired by a play that I wrote, will look at the ways that shifting identities and politics within queer women’s communities are impacting the spaces where these women gather.

Have you finished watching Orange is the New Black Season Two yet? Of course you have. Twice, probably. And you’ve watched all the interviews with the cast and read every news clip you can find that even obliquely references season three, but now you have eleven and a half months to wait and no new episodes to sustain you. Here’s how to kill time until the Litchfield crew returns.

Playlist: Speakeasy Bangers, A QPOC Block Party

A-Camp this year was on some new shit. One of the best parts about this past camp was our QPOC-only space called The Speakeasy. Unlike what some people imagined in the comments section of 36 Reasons Why QPOC-Only Spaces Are Very Necessary, The Speakeasy was super fulfilling, didn’t at all increase support for white supremacy, and generally enhanced the atmosphere of  queer love on the mountain.…

We Won A Thing! Indiana Judge Throws Out State’s Same-Sex Marriage Ban

We Won A Thing! Indiana Judge Throws Out State’s Same-Sex Marriage Ban

The train just keeps on rolling: This morning, a federal judge in Indiana determined that the state’s same-sex marriage ban is unconstitutional, and couples in the state have already begun marrying.

Amy Sandler and Niki Quasney sued Indiana for recognition of their marriage, performed in Massachusetts last year. They were granted immediate relief so Quasney, who is terminally ill, could receive a proper death certificate recognizing her family. The appeal for their case brought about today's ruling. via Lambda Legal

“The Switch” Is More Than Just A “Transgender Comedy”

Trans representation has always been a tricky subject. With growing trans visibility, it’s sad so many portrayals rely on tropes that are patronizing, condescending, and downright eww, eww, and eww. But while outside portrayals of the trans community remain outdated and stale, trans artists, musicians, and actors have been stepping forward with fresh takes on trans people and lives.
