Oh hi. Hey there. What’s a nice weirdo like you doing in a place like this? Welcome to this week’s Friday Open Thread, where we get to sit back and relax and talk about how the week treated us. This is a special edition of the Friday Open Thread with a lot more cooks in the kitchen; instead of being hosted by one Autostraddle staffer, this week the open thread is being hosted by Riese, Laneia,…

Things I Read That I Love #135: Too South To Be North and Too North To Be South

HELLO and welcome to the 135th installment of Things I Read That I Love, wherein I share with you some of the longer-form journalism/essays I’ve read recently so that you can read them too and we can all know more about Adam Levine! This “column” is less feminist/queer focused than the rest of the site because when something is feminist/queer focused, I put it on the rest of the site. Here is…

When you’ve starred in an amazing Netflix series, you win an award from GLAAD, you just made the cover of Time, you’re producing and hosting a TV show coming to MTV soon, you’ve been on talk shows ranging from Melissa Harris Perry to Katie, President Obama mentions you by name during his Pride Month speech and you’re one of the faces of the modern trans movement in America, it’s really quite…

Wilder Hungers: Okra Hoecakes with Coconutty Collard Greens and Central Florida

Wilder Hungers_Rory Midhani_640px

Hi hi hello!

I am writing to you from an air mattress strategically placed in front of my AC unit in my living room where I have been sleeping for days because it’s so damn hot, hooray! I actually just got back from a quick romp in Central Florida, the place of my birth, where Jen and I went for the 4th of July.

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

As much as I ragged on it, there are a bajillion things I miss about the Florida…

…but what you’re all here for is Poussey’s device that allows you to pee stand up, which is technically already a thing, but I think we’d buy spoons if Poussey said she invented them. I think Poussey could say she’s invented the toilet brush and y’all would buy yourselves at least six toilet brushes, you would have a room in your house just for toilet brushes.

Anonymous asked:

How did you and your girlfriend get together? I think you met through Autostraddle but then what happened? Inquiring minds want to be inspired!

quirkyrican answered:

we both worked/wrote for Autostraddle but didn’t meet until we were on top of Mt. Feelings. She kissed me like a boss and charmed me like no other. But we played it mad cool, got to know each other. Had actual conversations on the phone bc long distance. She went to Spain for a bit. We wrote letters. I visited bc who the f*ck wouldn’t go to Spain to see Spain and a beautiful, super smart, ridic on my level human?

Then more letters, love poems, Skype-times, phone calls, days without contact, days to daydream.

Then like fate, the universe, and her own ambition landed her at a fancy university in my city.

I asked her to be my girl the night after our first trip to Ikea bc FTW.

It’ll be a year next month of being official boo thangs.

two years of knowing each other.

Life is good.

I’m hers for as long as she’ll have me.

Look, here’s what I want you take away from all this: I don’t want you to feel like an unforgiveable horrible person because you laughed at the scene where Nicky had sex with Soso to shut her up. That material was carefully crafted for you to laugh at it. The show is designed in order for you to find it funny. Don’t hate yourself because something created to evoke laughter has done its job. What’s important is that you take some time to think about what it means to find shit like that funny. That’s the basic point of consuming media that will never be completely free of problematic concepts: know that shit is fucked up, know that the fucked up shit may not be punished in the world of the fiction, and know that when you see that shit in real life, you’re gonna punish its ass twice over on behalf of the unpunished shit of the media you enjoy consuming. It’s okay to enjoy things that aren’t 100% perfect if you recognize where they go wrong, especially because you recognizing what makes it wrong in the show will make you more likely to spot it in real life, and shut that shit down.

Playlist: Songs I Heard At Waffle House

I was 21 years old the first time I had sex and the first time I went to Waffle House. They were two completely separate incidents, but they’re linked in my mind because each was a catalyst into adulthood in its own way: After losing my virginity, I could feel any notion of heterosexuality fluttering away, and obviously there’s no going back to those halcyon days of childhood once you realize you can eat a $5 breakfast literally whenever you want, 24/7, 365 days a year. Truly, the biggest difference between losing my virginity and going to Waffle House for the first time was the soundtrack.

I chose these two together because right now I’m going through what I like to call “gender chaos” — something I’ve talked about with both of them at length. I don’t feel comfortable with any pronouns right now and I am fine with that, with just being an eternal shrug of a person. I wish my pronoun could just be a shrug.

Intersectionality gives us the framework to understand the multiplicity of lived experience. It gave me insight into why my womanhood felt so different from that of my white friends and allowed me to understand the implications of being the Other on a structural level. I was able to understand that maybe some of my experiences hadn’t been shaped wholly by my actions but by forces of hierarchy way outside of my control.
