Rejoice! Autostraddle’s blanket Motrin sponsorship deal appears to be over!

While the community-minded part of me is concerned that their potentially lucrative ad deal has run its course, the greater, overwhelmingly selfish part of me is ecstatic that we may once again be treated to a bevy of bizarre, bargain-basement banners.

Adsense has clearly spent the past couple of months sitting in a dark room thinking about what it’s doing with its life, because this first ad that I saw was perhaps the best-targetted I’ve ever seen on the site:

Extremely Ugly Lesbian Sandals*.

These things look like some kind of sports Birkenstocks, released in a limited edition shade of sex-toy-purple, specifically to appeal to the modern homoromantic lady.

*Equality disclaimer: sandals can also be worn by bisexuals, pansexuals and very sneaky straight girls that utilise their lesbionic vibes to reel in unsuspecting babydykes, rip their still-beating hearts from their chests, and devour them whole.

queer-your-tech-header_FINAL_640web 1. Get pissed at iTunes

Realize you hate iTunes. There are so many reasons to hate iTunes. Perhaps you have gotten pissed that it’s just damn slow. Maybe you’re peeved that it doesn’t monitor multiple folders or let you keep track of multiple collections and libraries very easily (fyi, you can have multiple iTunes libraries, it’s just not the smoothest).  Or it’s the lack of support for FLAC.…

No Man’s Land: The Limbo Of Florida’s Latest Court Ruling On Gay Marriage

No Man’s Land: The Limbo Of Florida’s Latest Court Ruling On Gay Marriage

In the wake of a Florida court’s decision to continue withholding equal rights for all its citizens, many were left feeling confused instead of angry. Over the past few years, absorbing these decisions from the news has yielded fairly polarized reactions: either yelling at the injustice or celebrating that we won a thing.

Wilder Hungers: Picnics and Homemade Herb Pasta

Wilder Hungers_Rory Midhani_640px

Hi Straddlers! I hope you are all enjoying the dog days of summer so far. I have been to known to complain about the heat this time of year, which is odd for a Floridian, I know. I swear it feels a million times hotter when you are surrounded by concrete and buildings with no lakes to jump into. One thing I’m not complaining about is all the time I have spent in my kitchen lately. The farmers’…

Cards Against Harassment Creator Better at Recognizing Sexism Than Institutional Racism

One brave Minnesotan, Lindsey, is doing the thing we have all wanted to do: giving catcallers a taste of their own bitter, shameful medicine. She does this by handing her street harassers clever little calling cards informing them of their transgression. Not only that, but she is secretly recording her interactions with them and putting them on the Internet. The whole wide web is now privy to the…

Welcome to this week’s Friday Open Thread! A place for friendship. A place for photos. A place for gifs and stories about your date or not-date or work or week or cat/dog or life.

I haven’t hosted this internet party in a few months and, like Carmen last week, have just returned from visiting the place my girlfriend lives (Los Angeles) for two months to the place that I live…

Things I Read That I Love #137: We Don’t Do Dumb Things Like That To Start The Day

HELLO and welcome to the 137th installment of Things I Read That I Love, wherein I share with you some of the longer-form journalism/essays I’ve read recently so that you can read them too and we can all know more about reparations! This “column” is less feminist/queer focused than the rest of the site because when something is feminist/queer focused, I put it on the rest of the site. Here is…

This week was Batman’s 75th anniversary, and a local comics shop in my area celebrated by hosting a Batman Dance Party. There was cheap beer, great music (save for playing “Blurred Lines” at the beginning of the party), and more than 250 people dressed up as Batman, with a few popular villains mixed in. I dressed up as Black Widow, because, let’s face it, Batman…

“Painkiller Jane,” Woman-Directed Bisexual Woman Superhero Movie, Announced While Marvel and DC Twiddle Thumbs

In a time when both Marvel and DC seem to refuse to make movies starring female superheroes, it was announced today that the Soska Sisters will be directing a Painkiller Jane movie. This means that not only is there going to be a comic book superhero movie starring a woman, but that movie will be directed by two women and the character that the movie is about is a bisexual woman.
