The New Yorker’s Skewed History of Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminism Ignores Actual Trans Women

image

Media coverage of transgender issues has increased rapidly in the last few years as trans people have made larger and louder pushes for relatively basic rights and recognition. Unfortunately, as ground is gained in the fight for trans acceptance, the opposition to that progress only grows more louder and more aggressive. This is visible in Michelle Goldberg’s latest piece for the New Yorker,…

San Diego Comic-Con 2014: “Mockingjay” Gets a Trailer! Mockingbird Joins “SHIELD!” “The Last of Us” Gets a Movie!

So, San Diego Comic-Con happened. That’s cool, right? Sadly, Marvel didn’t announce a Captain Marvel movie, DC didn’t announce that Wonder Woman (or even Harley Quinn or Poison Ivy) is canonically queer and Natalie Dormer did not ask me to marry her. Still, there was a lot of pretty cool news. So let’s check it out (and warning, there are slight spoilers throughout)!

Make a Gooey Thing: Oobleck!

Make a Gooey Thing: Oobleck!

Welcome to Make a Gooey Thing! In which I walk you through these weird substances I regularly make in my work with kids. This week, we’re making Oobleck.

oobleck11

Oobleck, traditionally made in middle school science classrooms from cornstarch and water during units on phases of matter, is a non-Newtonian substance, like quicksand or Silly Putty. It’s not a solid OR a liquid! Scientific American explains:

Taking a Look At the Eisner Winners and Wonder Woman’s New Movie Costume!

Back in April I highlighted the women (and one non-binary person) who were nominated for Eisner Awards, which many see as the premiere American comic book awards. Well, the winners of those awards were announcedat San Diego Comic-Con recently and so I thought I’d go over them and point out some of my favorites. But wait! That’s not all that was announced at Comic-Con! We also got…

Man, the anger directed at Autostraddle for putting A+ content on Facebook is insane. Yes, it’s disappointing to click on a link and realize you can’t read it. I don’t have A+, so I get it. But I enjoy Autostraddle and want to support them in anyway I can. If I can’t afford to get A+ I can at least tolerate occasional inconvenience and very mild frustration so AS can continue to bring me kickass content and compensate the people who provide it.

The Exciting Rise of Christian College LGBT Groups — And What They Mean for the Future

The Exciting Rise of Christian College LGBT Groups — And What They Mean for the Future

image

As we can all imagine (and as some of you know), evangelical Christian college campuses are not the friendliest to LGBTQ students. Attempts to create supportive communities have been sporadic and met with limited success. However, according to two Gordon College alumni writing for The Atlantic, Philip Francis and Mark Longhurst, there’s new hope in 2014: “[O]ver the past two weeks, an LGBT group…

Q-Taku: Animesque Web Series RWBY is Everything Wrong With “Strong Female Characters”

Q-Taku: Animesque Web Series RWBY is Everything Wrong With “Strong Female Characters”

Q-taku is a column by Rose where she discusses anime, manga and other parts of associated pop culture and its fandom, and her take on it all as a queer feminist viewer.

rwby 1

Anime is a pretty varied medium, with a wide variety of visual styles. But there is one particular aesthetic – the big eyes, wild hair colors and action-packed battle scenes – that’s associated with it more than any other, and…

Get Baked: The UK Farewell Tour

Get Baked: The UK Farewell Tour

image

Today I leave the UK, a country (of countries) that I’ve grown into for the past three years. There are many things I love about the UK — and my city, London, especially — but I can’t say British food ranks particularly high among them. I was deeply baffled when confronted with my first (vegetarian) toad in the holewhile living in catered student halls and I die a little inside every time someone…

Please Step Over Here: The Perils Of Traveling As A Trans Woman

I’m a girl on the move. Between a long-distance relationship, science conferences, science-fiction conventions and a general love of random adventures, I’ve managed to log well more than 15,000 miles of travel in the last year alone. I think I’ve travelled by just about every mode of transport available in that period: car, bus, airplane, train, boat, TARDIS, submarine, etc. Wanderlust is my…

Confused Cats Against Feminism Saves Me From Defenestrating Myself

I am a big fan of cats and Tumblrs and Tumblrs featuring cats saving my sanity when it comes to matters of misogyny and/or stupidity. So it is no surprise that I am ALL THE FUCK OVER the latest feline Tumblr craze. Let me explain.

Some lost souls who don’t seem to have a clear definition of feminism started a Tumblr/hastag/misguided internet movement. It includes women from various nations…

There Was a Pride Parade in Final Fantasy XIV and You Should Care About It!

image

Last weekend, the largest group of LGBT gamers ever gathered for an epic, virtual pride parade in Final Fantasy XIV. Though pride parades have happened in Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, or MMORPGs, in the past, this one in particular is notable for its size and context.

An MMORPG is a game where people can customize personal avatars to go on a series of adventures for experience…
