Top Eight TV Female Bosses Who Aren’t Afraid To Get Bossy

Top Eight TV Female Bosses Who Aren’t Afraid To Get Bossy

image

Despite a childhood and adolescence throughout which I was routinely described as “bossy,” I find the day-to-day realities of being the boss to be very challenging. For example, sometimes I feel like the worst boss ever and at those times I want to run away and live on a raft on the ocean or go write a novel in the woods! Sometimes I want to smash pudding into my face! Sometimes I want to fire…

Rhymes With Witches: The Frenemies of “Bachelorette”

I don’t understand why Bacheloretteisn’t a more popular movie. It’s one of the few movies that tackles female friendships in the most honest and brutal way possible. But even better, it showcases some of the most horrible, selfish, mean women ever to grace the silver screen. So obviously this makes it one of my favorite movies of all time. Seriously, I don’t even…

Things I Read That I Love #138: I Am Perfectly Normal And Fine, I Told Myself

HELLO and welcome to the 138th installment of Things I Read That I Love, wherein I share with you some of the longer-form journalism/essays I’ve read recently so that you can read them too and we can all know more about the tallest woman in the world! This “column” is less feminist/queer focused than the rest of the site because when something is feminist/queer focused, I put it on the rest of…

FRIDAY OPEN THREAD: If We Ran The Zoo

FRIDAY OPEN THREAD: If We Ran The Zoo

Hello, vials of peppermint oil! It’s Friday, which means it’s once more time for us to gather and perform witchcraft before dusk. JK! It’s Friday, which means it’s time for y’all to spill your guts in our weekly Friday Open Thread and then communicate with one another in a manner which often can imitate “real world” social interaction!

It’s super cute.

I’m 20 and sometimes my friend points out that my eyes disappear when I smile really hard. I think — I know — I think she doesn’t mean it in a shitty way (“I always forget that you’re Asian,” she’s also said), but every time I hear it, it burns red hot in my brain for the rest of the day. I’ve learned enough to know that when I was 15 and people said, “It’s funny because your eyes aren’t even that small,” they were also saying, “You don’t look that Asian.” I suspect this is the same kind of thing. Then I suspect that I’m doing a lot of introspection for a hang sesh with my friends.

International Autostraddle Summer Brunch Weekend Is August 23 and 24!

Brunch! For folks like me who cannot prepare eggs without feeling gross but love eating them, like to drink with every meal, and/or enjoy being raucous specifically in the morning, brunch is the most important meal of the day. Luckily, the only thing that makes eggs benny with hashbrowns and toast even better is a bunch of really adorable new and old faces coming into your life to love you until…

Eight Ways I’ve Been Made to Feel About My Asian Eyes

Eight Ways I’ve Been Made to Feel About My Asian Eyes

image

1.I’m 15 and for the first time in my life, a teacher calls me out on sleeping in class when I’ve been awake the whole time. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened earlier, because kids have made fun of my eyes since preschool. Times are a-changing I guess. I’m the only Asian in my class, one of three in my entire high school, and people bring it up all the time for the rest of the year. I get it. It’s…

Album Review: Jenny Lewis’ “The Voyager” Is A Little Bit Of Magic

Album Review: Jenny Lewis’ “The Voyager” Is A Little Bit Of Magic

feature image via NPR

When I met Jenny Lewis, I was seventeen and awkward and wore too much denim and was having a lot of feelings. At the time, she was singing about the city of Glendora and what is possibly the shittiest New Year’s Eve of all time.

It wasn’t until a few years later that the band Rilo Kiley (and Lewis, its simultaneously adorable and acerbic lead singer) cemented their position…

Sober in the City: The Life-Changing Day My Addict Partner Left Me

image

January 7, 2009 was one of the best days of my entire life. However, at the time, I didn’t actually realize this. In fact, on that very specific day, I felt like my world had been shattered and that I was experiencing one of the worst days ever. The events that transpired on that day would set me on a different path, one that would lead to greater happiness, freedom, self-esteem, and success.…

Dear Queer Diary: Food Journaling, Glorious Food Journaling

Dear Queer Diary_Rory Midhani_640px

Food is very important to me — and I mean that in more than the usual food/water/shelter sense. In the past week alone, I have made pita bread from scratch, visited a new restaurant after perusing about a million Yelp reviews, and convinced my girlfriend that we needed to have ice cream on both Friday evening and Saturday afternoon (frankly, she didn’t need much convincing, which is one of the…
