Facebook Says Goodbye, You Say Ello

Facebook Says Goodbye, You Say Ello

image

On Monday night I sat in the living room talking with friend and technology writer Taylor Hatmaker about whether she had heard of new anti-Facebook social media platform Ello. She had written days earlier about Facebook’s crackdown on the real name policy and how it disproportionately affects LGBT populations, so I thought she might be interested. We noticed a movement among our friends, the majority of whom are queer, towards this sparse but sleek new invite only social media platform and figured it was worth signing up, you know, just to see.

Grey’s Anatomy Episode 1101 Recap: Just the Gay Parts, Plz.

Grey’s Anatomy Episode 1101 Recap: Just the Gay Parts, Plz.

image

This is the first recap of the gay parts of the eleventh season of Grey’s Anatomy, aka Shonda Rhimes Night: Act One.

Six full minutes. That’s how long I waited for Callie and Arizona to show up on screen. It’s unacceptable. Let’s cut everyone else out of this show and turn it into their lady-loving telenovela and be done with it. I mean, I love Grey’s Anatomy, but could we at least get an old fashioned spin-off called ‘Lez Practice: Callie and Arizona’ or something?

Gotham Episode 101 Recap: Less Batman, More Lesbians

Gotham Episode 101 Recap: Less Batman, More Lesbians

image

New series Gotham is Fox’s brightest star and biggest hope for the season. With the fervor surrounding Monday’s premiere, I think the excitement is holding.

DC comic’s iconic Batman stories are well-known. Gothamrecounts the early days of Batman’s childhood, directly following his parents’ death. It’s a dark and moody modern take on the character, and its steampunk cityscapes do create a beautiful backdrop with a surreal quality not often seen in network television. And it’s always fun to hear an origin story, even if it’s basically in the form of Batman: The Beginning-ing. In this case you’ll certainly be introduced to nearly all of Batman’s foes way back when, whether they are also children or already grown, which turns the whole show into a guessing game where the prize is smiling knowingly at your TV whenever you identify a villain.

FRIDAY OPEN THREAD: What Are You Wearing This Evening?

FRIDAY OPEN THREAD: What Are You Wearing This Evening?

image

Hi, apple pies! Welcome to this week’s Friday Open Thread.

This week I’m catsitting for my ex- (now ex’s) cat, which is transparently an excuse to take a working vacation in an apartment that, unlike mine, has somewhere to sit outside and more than one door. She partially paid me in groceries and booze, which has been really lovely for my productivity, and I get to hang out with some family while I’m in town (I’m definitely bringing my youngest relatives Lumberjanes). So far the cat seems only slightly confused.

Transparent Episode 101 Recap: The Family That Eats Ribs Together

Transparent Episode 101 Recap: The Family That Eats Ribs Together

image

Hello and welcome to the very first episode of Transparent, the new Amazon exclusive show that we’ve been talking about since February. It features a family with adult children whose parent comes out as a trans woman, and have A Lot of Feelings. Maura, the trans woman and parent referenced in the title, is played by a cis man, Jeffrey Tambor, which is not ideal for many reasons but is, I guess, the world we live in. To be clear, Maura isn’t out to her family as a trans woman for much of this episode, but we’ll refer to her as Maura and with she/her pronouns.

The Casual Monger: Lemon-Thyme Cheese for the Intermediate Monger

The Casual Monger: Lemon-Thyme Cheese for the Intermediate Monger

One of the first Homosteading articles I wrote introduced the concept of making the world’s most basic and delicious yogurt cheese using minimal ingredients. In the spirit of mongering on the cheap, I wanted this week’s post to provide a slight challenge to the economic dairy enthusiast, and broach next-level cheese with gusto. Behold! A delicious cheese that introduces the use of acids (vinegar and rennet) without all of the complications of full-fledged mongering.

I think a lot of people my age had this early onset social awareness due in part to Dave Chappelle. That leads me to Chappelle’s Show and The Boondocks, which are these amazing works where they’re so smart but still somehow broad enough that people find them funny even though they might be laughing at the most simple version of the joke and missing the statement and observations being made. I like anything where you don’t get all of the jokes the first time through or every joke is layered so it’s funny in like 3 different ways — I think 30 Rock and Arrested Development are my favorite examples of that. A show that will always be near and dear to my heart is Happy Endings. It wasn’t perfect but I think it’s the first real example of what I consider post modern comedy. To me it was the sort of humor that really trusts that audiences can be smart and don’t have to be spoon fed jokes and opens the door to what can even be considered the “joke” of a scene. Also, Orange is the New Black is groundbreaking and I think we won’t even realize how much so until we see the things that come after it and are made possible because of that show.

Anonymous asked:

thank you for all the bi stuff + is faking it worth watching? i wasn't really keen on the idea of fake lesbians but is it ok? (sorry that's really vague)

i think faking it is worth watching, yes! the cat’s out of the bag now anyhow, one of them is gay and the other isn’t, so the fake lesbian part is over.

i actually wasn’t involved in anything relating to any of the bi stuff that’s gone up so i can’t take credit for it, but <3

We’re All About It: A High Velocity Love Story Starring My Fancy Vacuum

Welcome to We’re All About It, where we talk about investment-worthy things that are going to make your adult lives 100% more amazing.

Once upon a time, I lived in a college dorm room and my only cleaning supplies were a flimsy plastic handbroom and some mostly-dried-out Clorox wipes. Before that, I lived at home with my parents and didn’t think much about where cleaning supplies came from (the Windex stork?) or how much they cost. Then I moved into my first apartment and was suddenly in charge of buying my own toilet paper and cleaning my own messes. I slowly started acquiring a quite decent arsenal of cleaning tools and products. For the first time ever, I owned a vacuum cleaner.

Calluses and Cow Sheds: How I Found My Queerness in Rural America

Calluses and Cow Sheds: How I Found My Queerness in Rural America

image

I found my queerness in rural America. In the whirring of the female operated Massey Ferguson tractor, in the big brown boots that farm life let me wear.

I learned to lick a vagina balanced on the 2 ½ foot wide bed of my trailer with the collective rumble of 43 female goats ruminating grass just outside.

That year I spent a lot of time watching the goats and cows eat grass. Mostly because I found their single-minded focus incredibly comforting. Also because our fences were shoddy and I had to figure out how they were constantly escaping. I was learning to care for animals like I was learning to listen to myself: in silent and slow observation.
