“Rural life is wild. This sounds like a circular statement, but I think it’s the best word we have for a living system of constant surprises. There was the day the yaks escaped for a walk in the woods; there was the day the Nigerian Dwarf birthed quadruplets, each smaller than a fist, each needing to be bottle fed; there was the cow shed that nearly collapsed on top of us, the daily tractor repairs. Each of these pastoral events were completely unforeseen at the beginning of the day, and by darkness, each of these were resolved in their own way, just as I fell asleep every night to a different world than that in which I awoke. On farms there’s a necessity for flexibility and there is a reveling in the unknown and unforeseen. Animals conform to no one’s schedule; they birth and die and trample fences on a timeline all their own. The natural world’s disregard for the rules and schedules of humans appeared to me a confidence that I in my lifetime of people pleasing envied. I gained an appreciation for messiness, which enabled me to welcome and wander within my own queer identity.”

Things I Read That I Love #147: I Couldn’t Wait To Read Books, Drink Beer, Smoke Pot, Get Laid.

White Lesbian Couple Starts Family, Comes With Unwanted Blackness
Wrongful birth and breach of warranty — that’s what Jennifer Cramblett, a white lesbian mom from Ohio, is suing the Mid-West Sperm bank for. I’m not a lawyer but something about those two terms felt weird. Here’s how Wikipedia defines wrongful birth and U.S. Legal defines breach of warranty:
Wrongful birthis a legal cause of action in some common law countries in which the parents of a…
As far as I can figure, lesbians love witch movies because we’re all just pawns of Satan, flying around on hybrid brooms, eating hummus out of cauldrons, collecting black cats, sucking the lives out of little children and dating everybody in our covens.
Truthfully, is there anything more stereotypically lesbian than a ghost? Life basically breaks up with you, and then you spend the rest of eternity haunting some house, moping around, listening to “You Oughta Know” and rattling chains until some living being notices how miserable you are. Yeah, we get it, ghost. You’re sad.

Women That Go Bump In the Night: Lady-Monsters Of Cinema

Hey you little bat-shaped marshmallows, it’s getting closer to the most wonderful time of the year: Halloween, the only day out of the whole year where it’s acceptable to dress my cat up in costumes and Instagram to my heart’s content. Last Halloween, I managed to realize my dream of publicly pressuring my friends Carly and Robin into dressing up as Gomez and Morticia Addams via a very successful…

Roxane Gay discussed violence and fairytales at Bitch, saying in regard to An Untamed State:
“How do you overcome this, physically, emotionally, spiritually? What happens next? That’s the truly difficult thing and I would like to see more people focus on that. There are no happy endings. There are happier endings. I think there’s hope even at the end…

About a month ago, give or take depending on your region, a whole new crop of young queers set off to college with visions of newfound freedoms, mind-expanding classes, and probably exciting new sexcapades (but stay safe, kids). Now that some time has passed the brutal realities of soul-crushing exam schedules, wacky roommates, and dubious cafeteria food are starting…
People might get confused,” a woman once told me. She was a therapist and a socialist, but she worried about what people thought. “People might imagine that sexual abuse makes lesbians.”
“Oh, I doubt it.” I was too angry to be careful. “If it did, there would be so many more.

Orange is the New Black Recap 211: Hippie Nuns and Foreshadowing

Back in the cozy seaside town of Litchfield, Hurricane Sandy, I mean Wanda, is ripping through town, setting the stage for some high winds that will surely up the ante as we approach the season finale.
It opens with a douchey newscaster forecasting into the Litchfield TV room as Soso, Yoga Jones and the two white girls hash out their hunger strike demands. It’s like a lesbian processing session…
