We see violence not only in the crimson of blood spilled far too many times but also in the varying shades of brown on the skins of people of color. To be a person of color in the United States, and in the global narrative, is to be the shadow of violence.

There’s less at stake emotionally with a casual partner. This is the very target at which critics aim their arrows—how can women enjoy sex without an emotional connection?!—but this lack of investment can be freeing. It’s the same relative anonymity that causes some people to blurt out their deepest secrets to their hairdresser or a taxi driver. When we’re with someone who isn’t a fixture of our daily life, our egos relax enough to let a little authenticity come through. Rather than worrying about impressing the other person, you can be more assertive.

I’m a smallish person, with a quiet voice and quiet behaviors that don’t always prove the best conduit for my (often) loud ideas and emotions. When I was a teenager, I’d spend entire Saturdays practicing White Stripes songs in my bedroom, which I pretended was a garage, on my plastic acoustic guitar, which I pretended was an electric, artificially screeching up into the high notes when I sang so that I’d sound more like Jack White, who has to reach farther for them than I do. When I watch Annie Clark be St. Vincent being Steve Albini, growling Big Black songs into a processed microphone, I think: so that’s what that game looks like, turned into a professional sport. Pedals, microphones, body language — all these things can make you even louder than you are in your own head. Juxtaposed with smallness, quietness, and yeah, female-bodiedness, they become louder still. And maybe that juxtaposition is who you really are.

I’ve never liked the term “to overcome” which is so often used when we speak of adversity, as if one could vanquish all barriers if only one is strong enough. Instead the term “to make peace” has always resonated with me. Making peace for me was about laying down my sword in the battle against myself. To stop perceiving myself through a filtered lens of what I should’ve been or how others may see me.

As soon as I saw the advertisement for this shoot, I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of. In the last, year I’ve been slowly coming out as a transmasculine person (specifically nonbinary/agender). Gender presentation is such a crucial part of who we are, and unfortunately determines how well we are treated by the rest of the world, according to how well we “pass” based on society’s rigid and unrealistic expectations of what gender identity and expression means. I want to be a crucial part of defying these gender expectations and making room for everyone to be dapper, no matter their gender identity and/or expression, including any other identity that often gets stepped on by society (race, SES status, sexual and/or romantic orientation, education status, age, size, ability, etc,.) and regardless of how well they do or do not conform to the oppressive overarching gender expectations our society places on each one of us. - Bridge via He Said/We Said: Stylin’ in Cincy

In Spanish, there is a phrase, desde abajo which translates as “from below.” The disappeared students are not just memories or fosas clandestinas (clandestine graves). They are part of a culture, part of a sequence of pulverizing attempts to silence los desde abajo. So this is where we are. Witnessing los desde abajo push back. Not just in México, but in the mass demonstrations across the US against police brutality and the war against black lives, and the global displays of solidarity for Palestine and other oppressive regimes.
