See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I don’t wanna
Becoming Us positions itself as being pro-transgender. It seems very much like the producers and the people who star in it feel like they’re being good allies and they’re doing a public service. Really, I’m afraid that it’s giving people a bad example of how to react when one of your loved ones come out. The moral of the first two episodes seems to be ‘trans people are difficult and they cause a lot of stress and drama in their cis loved one’s lives. So it’s okay if you don’t react very well, it’s okay if you’re not supportive right away and it’s okay if you make it all about you,’ which is not a message that I want to hear or have broadcast on national television.

Fine, Cate Blanchett. FINE. You didn’t spend your nights in the late ‘90s sitting on a roof with Gillian Anderson getting high and talking about UFOs and the ephemeral nature of life and our tiny place in this enormous universe. You didn’t hold her hand at the MoMA and brush her hair out of her face when she started to cry after you and found yourself face-to-canvas with Monet’s wall-sized Water Lilies.

“From memory, the conversation ran: ‘Have you had relationships with women?’ And I said: ‘Yes, many times. Do you mean have I had sexual relationships with women? Then the answer is no.’ But that obviously didn’t make it.”

You weren’t kicked out of Notre-Dame de Paris one Sunday morning after getting accidentally drunk together at brunch and deciding to attend mass on a whim. You don’t need the scissoring t-shirt I bought to mail to you because NONE OF THAT HAPPENED.

Sigh.

Sorry Y’all, Cate Blanchett Didn’t Actually Have Many Relationships With Women

People voiced opinions as if they were vying for my soul in the battle of good and evil. I had no idea that people had so many feelings about Reddit. I got everything from “NOOOOooooooOOooooOOOOooooOOO WHY” (our own Anna Bongiovanni) to “Hard yes” (courtesy of Cee Webster, our website magician). One person even messaged me privately to tell me that Straddlers hate Reddit — is this true? Is this a thing? But it was this response from Taylor Hatmaker at the Daily Dot (and also of Autostraddle) that swayed me: “reddit is the bestworst, but it’s one of the foremost communities shaping internet culture either way.” Bingo. That’s it.

Autostraddle: Congratulations on being the first openly transgender model to be profiled by Vogue in this year’s May issue.

Andreja Pejić: Thank you!

Autostraddle: How is the world of modeling changing for trans people?

Andreja Pejić: I think we’re moving away from the shock value and this sort of gimmicky casting that prevailed when I first started modeling. And that’s important. Why should transgender women — why should any women — be typecast? This is an industry based on your look, not your gender or your sexuality, and it’s good to see the shift toward that truth.

Autostraddle: How do you feel like we’re doing with trans visibility on TV?

Andreja Pejić: We’ve made a few strides. Over the past year, we have had Transparent and Laverne’s character on Orange Is the New Black. But like in modeling, we need to move away from these stereotypes and start seeing trans stories that aren’t necessarily focused on being trans.

Autostraddle: What’s next for you?

Andreja Pejić: I want to keep modeling for as long as I can. I have some projects on the way that I’m really excited about. And I’m just open to all the possibilities that will be coming my way.
