35. Do you think it’s ok to buy the giant size mayonnaise container that will last forever and force you to put your entire hand inside the jar to get to the bottom of it six months from now? Or do you think it’s an all-around better plan to buy the very small container of mayonnaise that will run out in a very reasonable amount of time and won’t require you to be elbow-deep in mayonnaise?
The Runaways were teenage girls, in way over their heads with an abusive, predatory manager; one could hardly fault them for not knowing how to react. Regardless, this story remains less about what Jackie Fox’s bandmates did or didn’t do in 1976, and more and more about how they’ve failed her in 2015.
As a trans woman, I’m pretty willing to watch most movies about or featuring trans women, and I’ve been waiting to fall in love with one of them for a long, long time. I came close when I saw Gun Hill Road, but in the end, I was really just enamored with Harmony Santana’s performance. It wasn’t until I saw Tangerine that I really felt butterflies.
And here’s the other thing: Serena has dominated the world of tennis for two generations against a backdrop of racist, sexist rhetoric and commentary from sports fans, sports media, and the general pop culture world at large. Her body is sexualized and scrutinized more than any other athlete in the modern sports world (as is almost always the case with black women). Her powerful presence is interpreted through a dehumanizing racist lens. Serena is chastised, mocked, and derided for things we celebrate and honor about John McEnroe (on-court intensity), Andre Agassi (off-court branding), Boris Becker (aggression), Roger Federer (arrogance), and on and on.
She has done it longer and better than any active athlete in America. She has done it all by herself. She has done it right in the middle of a perfect storm of misogyny and racism. And she is showing no signs of slowing down.
Serena Williams won a Wimbledon title again this morning. Serena Williams is the greatest athlete in America.
Santana doesn’t answer because she doesn’t understand. Instead, she waits for Brittany to explain what she means, trusting that Brittany will indeed do so. Sure enough, Brittany draws a breath and looks up and away for a second, like a schoolchild recalling a recitation so that she might perform it for her headmaster. When she speaks next, she does so quickly, almost breathless.
- Riese: ATTENTION: Rory Gilmore is playing a lesbian in a movie about lesbians.
- Mey: Yeah, Heather and I already stopped being friends because she was trash talking Izzie Stevens.
