Brunch 9/13 for Autostraddle!

phillyqueerbrunch

Come one, come all, and bring your friends along for a potluck brunch fundraiser to support AUTOSTRADDLE.COM!! Autostraddle is many things to many people: a community, a source of news (political, pop cultural, and always gay), an aesthetic inspiration, an outlet for thoughtful essay-writing, and a delightful Google Chrome homepage, among others. Autostraddle is the groundbreaking and world-making website that gives us all the best in “News, Entertainment, Opinion, Community and Girl-on-Girl Culture,” providing advice, support, and information to millions of queer, trans & cis ladyfolk and non-binary folk every month.

100% of the money donated will go towards supporting the March, and 100% of the food contributed will go towards us being happy and very full.

WHAT IS THE EVENT?
Philly Queer Brunch is a monthly queer potluck fundraiser supporting a different queer, trans, and otherwise justice-oriented organization or project each month. This month, we’re raising money for Autostraddle! We’ll enjoy our food and each other’s company, and chat about building sustainable queer communities online and in person, especially among queer and trans women. Inspired by Autostraddle’s “Interview with My Queer BFF” series, we’ll also be making a ZINE about our QUEER FRIENDSHIPS. ♥

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Since it’s a potluck, we’re encouraging everyone to bring a dish or drink to share AND $10 to donate. In exchange, you’ll get all-you-can-eat and all-you-can-drink brunch and great company!

Please also note: donations of ANY size are extremely welcome. If $10 isn’t feasible for you right now, we would still love to have you join us! And if you’re able to give more, the March could use your support.

WHO’S INVITED?
EVERYONE is welcome at PQB! We hope especially to create a safe and welcoming space for queer and trans women and genderqueer/non-binary folks, but we very much invite ALL folks to come join us.

WHERE CAN I FIND OUT MORE?
You can find us on Twitter (@PHLqueerbrunch) and Tumblr (phillyqueerbrunch.tumblr.com), and you can also sign up for our mailing list here: http://eepurl.com/3bCA5

***Accessibility information: 2319 St. Alban’s St. is a private home on a garden block in Graduate Hospital, and it has a small flight of 3 stairs at the front entrance. We are 100% committed to working with folks to make any and all necessary adjustments to make the space accessible, and are also always looking for alternative locations for brunch that do not require a rental fee. Please feel free to send a message to us at phillyqueerbrunch@gmail.com if you’d like to talk more :)

Why do we care so much about the quality of our representation? Why are so many outraged by what went down on Pretty Little Liars? Why are we so pissed about the ending of Orphan Black? Why are so many viewers scared that Amy’s gonna fall for a guy this season on Faking It? Why is representation so crucial for LGBTQ people specifically? Well, unlike many other minority groups, most queers are unlikely to have another family member with the same affiliation, which means media can stand in for real-life community. In the 2000 book Alternate Channels: The Uncensored Story of Gay and Lesbian Images on Radio and Television, Steven Capsuto writes that “in America, broadcasting wields a power once reserved for religion: the power to tell people what is real.”

Director Jamie Babbit, who brought Natasha Lyonne down from the heavens and delivered us But I’m A Cheerleader has once again bestowed upon the lady-loving community a dark and twisted comedy: Addicted to Fresno. At once completely deranged and oddly sweet, Fresno follows two sisters in a codependent relationship in which Martha (Natasha Lyonne) habitually picks up the pieces behind recovering sex addict Shannon (Judy Greer). And in case you were wondering, yes, Lyonne plays a lesbian.

In December 1951, Bell debuted his tacos at his burger stands, they consisted of: prefried taco shell, ground beef, chopped lettuce, shredded cheese and a chili sauce Bell used from the same condiment he used on his chili dogs. In Taco USA, Arellano quotes Bell’s enthusiasm when a white man ordered a “take-oh” and loved it.

“I didn’t invent the taco,” Bell boasted, “but I believe I improved it.”

I hope you laughed. I did.

This was just the beginning of Bell’s plagiarized, fake ass taco crusade.
