Dig if you will the picture. A choreographer who is one of your father’s oldest friends is driving like Paris-Hilton-in-Rome through the parking lot of a fancy hotel. You are repressing a smile in the backseat because black people who drive recklessly make you feel like THE REVOLUTION HAS BEGUN.

How do I dress more feminine? I'm sick of my mum constantly insulting me (calling me a boy) because all I wear is leggings/jeans, shirts and sneakers/Vans.
ok first of all, I’m sorry your mom is being mean to you about your personal style!! that’s not cool!
onto dressing more feminine: you can definitely wear vans, sneakers, leggings, jeans, and t-shirts and still be feminine! for me, i’m all about combining textures and silhouettes, if that makes sense. like, I like to wear chunky oversized sweaters with leggings and that feels feminine to me. I also find that high-low t-shirts look super cute with a pair of skinny jeans! one of my resources for femme style inspo is autostraddle’s fashion articles - a wide range of ideas for a wide range of body types!
i’m also of the opinion that femme presentation exists on a spectrum: some people swing far towards the uber-girly (think lolita), while others sort of straddle the androgynous/futch line (think neutral palettes, lots of pants and blazers, tailored + structured silhouettes), and lots of people fluctuate as well!!
i’m a big fan of “hard femme” fashion and i really like @this-is-hard-femme for inspiration!! hard femme feels like a sort of bad-ass, intimidating, but still femme presentation. i channel it a lot in my day-to-day outfits i think. and from the sound of what you already wear, i think it might be something you would enjoy!
one look i love is lacey bralettes under shirts, which would make me feel really pretty, but unfortunately my boobs are a bit too big for any bralettes i’ve managed to find! but if you’re less endowed than i am, you might be able to find some really cute ones that fit you and i encourage you to check them out and rock them!! i think bralettes look really cool when paired with shirts that have interesting open backs or sheer t-shirts.
also!!! i encourage you to find some style icons! i find that super helpful in shopping for clothes. some people whose style i really like are: Ingrid Nilsen (out femme lesbian!) and Angel Haze (they’re my go-to andro inspiration). there are also some great style blogs out there: Fit For A Femme, FEMMEVIOLET, Refinery29,
also check out the femalefashionadvice subreddit! people post lookbooks there all the time and it’s great for inspiration!
it’s also important to consider your hair + makeup - you don’t have to wear makeup (it’s all about what you’re comfortable with!) but it CAN be a useful tool for adding femininity to your looks, especially the ones that lean more andro. often, all it takes is a simple cat eye (i like to go minimalist with just a flick on the corner of my eye and nothing actually lining my eyelids), some mascara, and a lipstick/stain/gloss/whatever (i’m partial to coral colours myself but you can find what makes you feel best!).
in terms of hair, there’s no hard and fast “long hair = feminine/short hair = masculine” rules. you can have a cute fluffy pixie cut and be femme as fuck, or you can have a long, carefully maintained mane and rock a super masculine-of-centre style. beware that some styles are more high-maintenance than others, especially when you go shorter! my current style is a shoulder-length blunt bob (also dyed purple that’s slowly dying) with an undercut to make me more ~visible~ (also good for the hot summer) and it’s super easy to throw it up in a ponytail or half bun which is like, lazy girly summer hair!
just remember that, no matter what your mom says, you really don’t have to totally overhaul your style if it’s out of your comfort zone. do what makes YOU feel good about yourself (and that’s okk if that includes being more feminine for your mom right now honestly). you don’t have to throw out all your old clothes and get new ones, just adding a few new pieces and changing the way you wear what you have now can make a difference! also vans look really cute with skirts!!
If I can be happy there, accept that in one way or another I may always have an unresolved body, and still delight in what I find? That is loving who I am now rather than the person I hope to one day be. When one of the most pervasive stories about your body type is that true happiness lies in your freedom from it, acknowledging and enjoying yourself as-is is a victory. I’m not supposed to like it, and yes, I certainly have down days, weeks, months, and years. But touch shows me all the work I have left to do as it reminds me of my right to be physical in a world that’s quick to deny that right.
