Domestic power — like, being in charge in your household — is a very satisfying kind of power, one that I think women are loath to give up. And it makes sense to me that women think they’d have to give up their control of the domestic sphere in order to take on more power in the larger world, and because of the way that world is structured, that seems like it would be a bad bargain for most women. You have so much power over people when they depend on you for care! This is kind of a dirty secret.
