This post talks about ‘sick lit’ books in the 1980′s and basically shows you how not to write illness in YA lit today.

It’s an interesting read that explores how illness in can create and affirm certain stereotypes based on how the author writes it. That’s the key word - ‘how’. Stereotypes about race, sexuality and gender can all stem from how an illness is viewed in a book through it characters. It’s something I’d never thought about before and makes me thankful for the more diverse writing we see today.

Give the post a read and make sure you don’t fall into any of the stereotypes including an illness in YA can bring.

“Because the truth is that children do, in fact, suffer, and it’s only natural that children are curious about illness and death and they either already are, or soon will be, grappling with it in their own lives. The pain demands to be felt, as it is written in The Fault of Our Stars. And there doesn’t need to be anything sick about that.”

There have been countless other victims of abuse at the hands of the state whose stories we’ll never hear, but that doesn’t make them any less valid or important to us as queer people. What I choose to take away from my trip to NYC is from a poster of Marsha “Pay It No Mind” Johnson that was at The Stonewall Inn vigil. Johnson was a trans woman of color and a leader in the queer and trans liberation movements. This poster of her says something that will forever resonate with me as a queer person with multiple oppressions, as well as privileges: “No Pride for Some of Us without Liberation for All of Us.

Mother of Navy Vet Shot at 30 Times by Police Begs For Justice

This video was posted by the mother of India Kager, who was shot 30 times by the police. One more unheard story of a black woman executed by the police for nothing. Moreover, for a really long time Mass Media didn’t have any information about this case.

In September  India Kager, a 27-year-old Navy veteran from College Park, Maryland, was sitting with her boyfriend and 4-month-old son, Roman.

Perry was a “person of interest” in a  homicide, according to the police. They additionally claim that they had “confidential information” that he “was going to” commit a “violent crime.” But that’s about all they’re willing to say at this time to justify the incident.

Kager had nothing to do with her boyfriends crimes – past or future.

However,  officers began firing rounds that killed both Perry and Kager, indiscriminately. The baby, however, managed to survive – no thanks to the police who sprayed bullets wildly a the car.

Police didn’t explain anything and no justice for her daughter happened, so she is begging for it.

God Help you.
