yes, i do. as long as our government denies us equal protection, they’re sending an affirmative message of bigotry to its citizens, that message is ‘gay people don’t deserve what you deserve’. your mum need only agree with the people in charge – the people who we elected, who ought to be “better” people, who ought to be the most qualified people for the job of running the nuts & bolts of our everyday lives, keeping us healthy and smart and equal – if she chooses to not approve of your sexuality. When the government give us the ok, homophobes will be forced to consciously object to the laws and ethics of the land in order to employ hate speech freely. Many will, just like many oppose our government’s position on abortion, and those people will go on screaming forever.
The crazy thing is, most people don’t really care about us either way. They don’t think about same-sex marriage. They maybe hear about some polls and think, “oh ok, gay marriage hasn’t ever won a popular vote” and assume that must be the right answer.
