Hello Ryder,
First I want to give appreciation for your blog, it is interesting, artful, intriguing, and very well done, thank you. Second in my exploration of your awesome site I noticed a post from 8.6.09 with a Hebrew phrase. As I was reading the comments one of the folks translated it as “This is my penance.” While this is correct, Hebrew words tend to have more than one meaning and the word “qafarti” can also be translated as “my heresy,” making the phrase mean “This is my heresy.” In traditional Jewish circles, generally meaning the Orthodox, strap-ons and any sort of strap-on sex would be considered taboo and would be frowned upon.
I lived in Israel for sometime and the message of this type of graffiti is probably speaking out against the puritanical sexual ethic found in Israel and the religious right who hold a monopoly on Jewish religious practice there. I believe the artist was playing with both meanings of the word but would identify as an ardent liberal and is most likely wishing for a more sex positive society. I am emailing you because I do not know how to post on your blog but I think that posting both translations of the phrase makes for even more interesting reading.
Again, thank you for your blog and the openness and positive nature with which you approach sex. I look forward to reading many more posts!
