I am about to quit my job because I was aggressively approached by a co-worker. It isn’t the first time and my managers seem to condone her behaviour. I am worrying that I will never work again. Have you ever left a job voluntarily? [IOU $5]
si, of course. why do you think you’ll never work again? people leave jobs all the time voluntarily for so many reasons – money, scheduling, moving away, lack of opportunity for advancement, etc. often management prefers it ‘cause if they fire you, they owe you unemployment benefits, but if you quit, it’s no skin off their back. if you feel uncomfortable there then your job performance will suffer, and ultimately it’s a better deal for everyone involved if you leave.
keep in mind i’m totally not an expert on this at all and also that i don’t have any experience in salaried jobs, but my friends with salaried jobs haven’t had any problems w/r/t quitting.
if you’re worried about not getting another job 'cause the job market sucks, then i don’t know what to tell you. so i’m gonna asume you’re asking 'cause you’re concerned about references?
the management at your job won’t want your next employer to know about the aggressive approaches any more than you do. nor do they have any vested interest in preventing you from ever working again. don’t cite that incident as the reason you left your old job. it’s just too complicated/loaded. pick another, neutral reason, like wanting to try a new industry or needing more/less/different hours, wanting to make more money, wanting to leave/try a corporate environment or needing a place closer to home – a bonus if you can find a reason that also explains why you’re perfect for the job you’re applying for.
if you’re applying for an hourly job, often your prospective employers never actually call your references anyhow, but most applications will ask for the name of your supervisor so pick the supervisor who likes you best. once i left this psycho greek restaurant in manhattan because the manager was totally psycho (for real) and i put my (then) boyfriend’s name as my supervisor (he worked there too) so that when they called, they’d ask for him instead of niko. he was a senior server so. don’t do that though unless you’re 100% positive you’ll get away with it though, which we were for various reasons. usually i’d put the names of the managers i was closest to.
when you quit it’s up to you if you want to be honest about why you’re leaving. if you do, i’d still suggest also mentioning the fake reason you plan to share with future prospective employers. then be an angel for the next two weeks/30 days/however long you’re stuck there. after you tell your employer that you’re quitting, you can start looking for jobs but don’t offer to fuck over your old job by starting a new one straight away before the two weeks are up, that might concern a new employer that one day you’ll do that for them.
when you’re done, thank everyone and be nice. you’re too good to work for someone who defends aggressive approachers, srsly.
