this is one of the weirdest formspring questions i’ve ever gotten
i mean i have no real way of knowing, i don’t know exactly how the other writers feel about comments. but i can tell you that of course i care about them, of course i do. there is no money for doing this, no salary or benefits or even a coffee machine, comments are more or less what i get ‘paid’ for what i write. when i work really hard on something and there are no comments, or the comments are bored or dismissive, or just inane like 'i really hope rachel maddow talks about this on her show!!1" it hurts my feelings. when comments are intelligent and responsive and want to have a discussion and recognize that this is something i put a lot of time and effort into, it feels good.
is this because i don’t respond to comments as often as some other writers? that is because i have a 9-5 job with a 40-minute commute each way where i can’t access the website and my boss can monitor all my internet activity. when i get home from that, i usually have just enough time to start working on another post for the next day, put some food in my face, and fall asleep. if i don’t respond to conversations in the comments it’s not because i don’t care about all of your feelings, it’s because i’m tired and need to prioritize. fair?
