autostraddle

I was watching this thinking ‘that girl looks familiar’ and then i realized 'she looks like that girl from my first high school and maybe also from hebrew school? that was always rapping in that band’ and then i realized 'oh, that is that girl’ and then 'oh that makes sense b/c i grew up ~30 mins from detroit and this song is about detroit’ and then i felt like maybe everyone i’ve ever known is a lesbian now

I read everything on Autostraddle, even if I only comment on the less-important stuff. Sometimes I have a lot of feelings, and I don’t know what to say. Thanks for still writing the important stuff even though we don’t comment as much.

thank YOU for just being you and for reading the things we write even though sometimes i imagine you with pippi longstocking braids and an antennae headband so i won’t get scared of being judged by you

Rachel Needs a Summer Intern

Hello internet! this is where I tell you about how I am looking for a “personal intern” aka a “person” to do “intern duties” for me. For the most part, these duties will be the slightly less glamorous kind of internet legwork that writing articles requires; applicants need, in short, to have insane internet kung fu and Google capabilities. I should be able to ask you to check on virtually any fact or news story or even image, and have you get it back to me in 10 minutes or less. Ideally, you already look up a lot of this stuff for your own interests, and have already found Judge Vaughn Walker’s social security number. (Just kidding don’t do that!!)

Here is a more detailed outline of what you’d be doing:

+ Finding images that we haven’t yet used anywhere on the site, given such nebulous prompts as “gay marriage” or “cute girl, possibly looking at computer??” (Bonus points if you have access to or ideas for finding images of women who aren’t white or thin.)
+ Finding background on news stories, both on AS and elsewhere. I realize our archives aren’t always the easiest to navigate, but when asked for “the last six articles on DOMA” or “Judge Ware’s history of controversial rulings” you should be able to find it ASAP.
+ Research and fact-check in general
+ Help brainstorm titles for things - obvs this requires an encyclopedic knowledge of T+S, Ani, and Indigo Girls lyrics. (Also SEO I guess.)
+ Find links for the Sunday Funday or possibly other articles - this involves knowing what kind of content we usually write about, and where to find it.
+ Keep on top of breaking stories on Prop 8, DOMA, DADT, etc - ideally you are near a computer basically 24 hours a day and can let me know the instant anything develops on these, as I am not near a computer 24 hours a day.
+ Help research new writers. This involves reading blogs, finding new blogs, trolling tumblr, reading more blogs, feminist or queer news or fashion sites, blogs, etc, and when you see something that you think is a good fit with AS, finding their contact info.

Does that sound fun? I thought so! Here is what I am looking for in you:

+ knowledge of HTML HUGE PLUS
+ available at least 10 hrs/week, ideally basically every weekday evening for hours and hours, preferably about 9-12 EST
+ up for lots of gchatting and psychotic emails late at night
+ probably this would be easiest if you are a journalism student or the like, but this is an equal opportunity/affirmative action position. Precocious twelve-year olds and 45-year-old moms will be considered equally.
+ …as will people of all genders/identities and sexual orientations, etc. Don’t worry about not being queer enough.

This position will last 18 weeks, at the end of which time you may be released back into the wild, or graduate to things like writing your own articles/daily fixes, or if we’re both happy then I guess things can stay the same?

This is unpaid and basically completely uncompensated, although we can figure out whatever title you need to put on your resume, you can have your face on the Team page, and I will be happy to write you a letter of recommendation or fill out a form for your school or whatever. Also there’s a good chance I’ll say something embarrassing and overly personal while drunk at some point, so you can look forward to that.

Send applications to rachel [at] autostraddle [dot] com: explain who you are, why you think you would be good at this, and why you want to do it. Resumes and writing samples are helpful but not required. If you have a blog or tumblr or anything, link me to it! Applications will be accepted through Friday the 27, and everyone who applied will receive a response on Tuesday the 31st. Okay thanks!

Sometimes, I find it upsetting or an emotion similar to that, when ‘politically important’ articles on AS have like, 12 comments but an essay about the lack of quality cinema these days gets over 200. It’s like - priorities, peple. PS I loved 'em both.

i used to get really irate about this too, but now i remind myself that a) only a small percentage of readers will ever comment on what they’ve read and b) while super informative and impeccably written, a politically important post doesn’t necessarily beg for the same level of dialogue that a pop culture-related post does.

i hope this makes you feel better. i don’t like it when you’re upset.
