Mindy Kaling on Bridesmaids:
A lot of crazy, incredible, over-the-top things happen in Bridesmaids, but the movie really succeeds because of the relationship between Kristen’s and Maya’s characters. I love seeing friendships between women realistically portrayed, and that was a beautifully depicted best-friendship - one wasn’t just the sidekick to the other. But then all the characters in the movie were fully formed. I love the scene where we first meet Melissa McCarthy’s character and all Kristen asks her is “How’s it going?” And Melissa says it’s going great, but she fell of a cruise ship, she hit every railing going down, a dolphin saved her, and how she has pins in her leg. I knew nothing about Melissa McCarthy until I saw the movie, and as an opening scene for an actress it was just magnificent. The fact that Bridesmaids did as well as it did was an amazing accomplishment. And I love that the movie wasn’t sold as “Get All Your Girlfriends and Go See Bridedsmaids!” It was just “Everybody Go See Bridesmaids, It’s a Funny, Awesome Movie.”

hi. i think i need to break up with my gf. i thought i loved her but now i’m just not attracted to her. i know this equals break up (which sucks) but i’m in a different country for a month. do i wait, or do it now (telephonically)? help. (please)

generally it sucks to break up over the phone or really anything besides face-to-face, but also; this might actually be the best time to do it. don’t let her get excited about your return only to be broken up with on arrival. and don’t put her through the absolutely undeniably agonizing experience of “feeling like your girlfriend/activity-partner doesn’t love you/isn’t attracted to you.” that is THE WORST, and you will indirectly punish all of her future girlfriends who won’t understand why she freaks out and thinks she’s being left every time they forget to call or show up late.

also she’ll have time to process and get over you without you being there to make her feel worse, and this is also a period of time in which you don’t have any scheduled activities in the near future, ‘cause that’s also a hard part – like, are we still gonna go to this concert, are you gonna pick me up from work on friday, shit i have to make my own dinner, WHEN WILL I HAVE SEX AGAIN, etc. depending on how serious your relationship was to begin with. when my heart was broken i just wished that the person who’d broken it would go away for a month and let me get over it without having to see their face every day at the gym (where we met and this person worked). look, you’re already doing that! HURRAH!

oh also she’ll probably flip out and tell you it was terrible to do that over the phone, and you’ll have to just wait that part out because i think that’s just a knee-jerk reaction to getting dumped – to find a real reason to be mad at the heartbreaker. she’ll realize at some point that you did right by her.
